A widespread disorder of skin pigmentation in which patches of skin, most frequently on the hands, face, armpits, groin, lose their colour. Vitiligo is thought to be an autoimmune disorder (in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues). The condition can arise at any age, but it usually develops in early adulthood.
Spontaneous repigmention occurs in certain cases. A course of phototherapy using PUVA can also induce repigmentation of the skin, and creams containing corticosteroid drugs can assist.
