An illogical, fixed idea not shared by others and not responding to reasoned argument. The central idea in a paranoid delusion involves jealousy or persecution; for example a person could falsely believe that she or he’s partner is constantly unfaithful or that they are being poisoned.

Persistent delusions are a sign of serious mental illness, such as manic-depressive illness or schizophrenia.
