An operation the alleviate pressure on muscles by making an incision in the fascia (fibrous connective tissue) that surrounds them.

Fasciotomy is often performed to treat compartment syndrome, an excruciating condition in which constriction of a group of muscles creates obstruction of blood flow; it gives the muscles space in which to expand. The procedure is also occasionally carried out as a surgical emergency after an injury has occurred in muscle swelling or bleeding within a muscle compartment.
