Hallux valgus

A deformity of the big toe in which the joint at the base protrudes out from the foot, and the top of the toe turns inwards.  The condition is more frequent in women, as it is often associated with wearing pointed, narrow, high-heeled shoes but it can be caused by an inherited weakness in the joint.  A hallux valgus generally leads to formation of osteoarthritis or a bunion in the joint, creating pain and limiting foot movement.  Extreme deformity can be corrected by osteotomy (removal of part of a bone) or arthrodesis (fusion of bones in a joint).
