Air embolism

The blockage of a tiny artery caused by an air bubble in the blood. Air embolism is very rare. In most cases it arises when air enters the circulation through a vein, either as the result of an injury or following surgery. Air embolism can also occur during air-travel accidents or scuba-diving, in which lung tissue ruptures, allowing and releasing air into the bloodstream.
