Lipid disorders
Metabolic disorders that lead to abnormal amounts of lipids (fats) within the body. The most widespread lipid disorders are the hyperlipidaemias, which are categorised by high levels of lipids within the blood. Hyperlipidaemia can create atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries by deposits of fatty material) and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). There are also some extremely unusual lipid disorders, such as Tay-Sachs disease, that are exclusively caused by inheritance.
