A widespread speech disorder caused by the protrusion of the tongue between the teeth so that the “S” sound is changed to “th”. In many cases, there is not a physical cause, but occasionally is caused by a cleft palate.

Unless there is an underlying cause, lisping often disappears by the age of about four years. If it continues past this age, speech therapy can be of required.
