Melanonychia
Dark or black colouration of a toenail or fingernail, caused by an excess of the pigment melanin. The colour usually forms a vertical streak down the nail.
Melanonychia is widespread in certain Asian and black people. In Caucasian people, it can be brought on by a naevus (pigmented blemish) underneath the nail; melanoma; HIV infection; or reaction to a rug.
