Neonatal death

The passing of a live-born infant in the first four weeks of his or her life. Neonatal death is classified as early or late: early neonatal deaths are deaths that take place is less than seven whole days from the time of birth; late neonatal deaths are those that happen after seven completed days after birth.

Nearly half of all neonatal deaths in the United Kingdom are attributed to prematurity; about a quarter to congenital malformations; and the rest to a range of difficulties with the delivery.
