Nervous habit

A nontechnical expression for a minor repetitive activity or movement. A nervous habit can consist on uncontrollable facial tics and twitches, similar to those seen in Gilles de a Tourette’s syndrome and certain forms of dyskinesia. Voluntary nervous habits, such as thumb-sucking and nail-biting, are widespread in children, but generally disappear naturally with time. All nervous habits get worse during periods of anxiety and tension and may be extreme in certain forms of depression, drug withdrawal, and anxiety disorder.
