Inflammation of the foreskin and the glans (head) of the penis.  Balanitis results in itchiness and/or pain and the entire area can be red and moist. Causes of balanitis include fungal or bacterial infection, phimosis (tightness of the foreskin), or chemical irritation by contraceptive creams or laundry products.

Treatment is mainly with antifungal drugs or antibiotic drugs (either applied to the skin as a cream or taken orally) and careful washing of the penis and foreskin.  If balanitis recurs frequently or is due to phimosis, circumcision can be recommended.
