Ovarian cyst

This is where part of the ovary swells and fills with fluid.  They commonly occur and are non cancerous, however as age increases, the chances of it becoming cancerous also increases.

Symptoms

They often remain symptomless, however they may produce abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, irregular menstrual cycles, nausea and fever.

Treatment

Routine pelvic examinations will usually detect an ovarian cyst.  After detection, there will usually be an ultrasound examination to establish exactly how big it is and whereabouts it lies.  In many cases the cyst will disappear of its own accord.  However in some cases it may be necessary for there to be surgical removal.
