Pancreatectomy
Removal of part or all of the pancreas, which can be carried out as treatment for pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). In unusual cases, pancreatectomy is undergone as a treatment for insulinomas (insulin producing tumours).
Pancreatectomy can cause a deficiency of pancreatic hormones and digestive enzymes. This situation can lead to diabetes mellitus, which needs to receive treatment with insulin therapy, and malabsorption, which needs oral supplements of pancreatin.
