Inflammation of the sclera.  It often accompanies a collagen disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, but also arises in herpes zoster ophthalmicus and Wegener’s granulomatosis.  Scleritis can cause certain parts of the sclera to become perforated and thin.  It is often persistent but usually responds to corticosteroid eye-drops. This is just a quick fix and a temporary measure.
