Takayasu’s syndrome

A disorder, also known as Takayasu’s arthritis, in which the arteries branching from the aorta become inflamed and progressively blocked.  The cause is not known.  Takayasu’s syndrome is hardly ever diagnosed outside Asian countries such as Japan.  Absence of a pulse in the neck or arms is a characteristic feature, and blood pressure is increased.  Symptoms such as paralysis of facial muscles and episodes of unconsciousness can arise as a consequence of minor strokes.
