Acacia has the aspect of a small tree or spiny shrub that grows in sandy soils, especially in the tropical areas of Africa. It has compound leaves disposed alternately and the  flowers are arranged in globose heads.

Acacia is especially used after the rainy season when its stems begin to exude gum, which is commercialised as gum Arabic.

Properties and Use

Acacia is a demulcent and it is usually used for inflammations in the respiratory, alimentary and urinary tracts forming a protecting layer.

It is also helpful for coughs and sore throat when used along with other astringents.

Also known as:  Gum Arabic Tree, Cape Gum
